Further Education vs Industry Recognised IT Learning

When he originally came to power, Tony Blair proudly announced his party’s mantra was “Education, Education, Education. A worthy enough focus and definitely not something one would think of associating with frustration and growing personal debt. But as time has gone on, as more institutions have gained the status of a university, and student loans have become effortlessly available to so many more, schools have encouraged many more young people to go for degrees without actually spelling out the cost.

It’s not in question that we need a more highly educated society, but are young people really receiving the very best advice? Let’s face it; is it such a difficult sell to persuade a young adult to leave the family home and live with a bunch of friends, not bother about getting a job for three or four years and get discounted beer at the student union bar. A simplified interpretation perhaps – naturally there’s a bit of lectures to go to, and a degree of juggling to make ends meet, then the rewards will be worth it in the end. But is that really so? For many families, the real cost of university education can go on for a long period after graduation, both in financial and social terms.

The student loan system (the best method of borrowing for students at university), tuition fees, accommodation and day to day living expenses over the time spent studying can set you back well over £30,000 – with no guarantee of work. It’s ironic that intellectual adolescents too often become back-at-home twenty-somethings who haven’t even conquered their first job. Not only do fathers and mothers continue having to pay for everything, but frustrated adult children in the house again can definitely get in the way!

Formal education can be a fulfilling experience for young people, and is the only way for many of our professions. But advisors and families should know that in some disciplines, there are other, sometimes better alternatives. In the computer industry, employers are crying out for commercially qualified IT professionals. Those who’ve been to University often end up having to bolster their IT training skills to be industry ready and compete in the job market with Microsoft, CompTIA or Cisco professionals. The sorry thing is they might have saved themselves three years and not been burdened with a five figure debt had they gone straight to a global online computer training provider. Possibly the beer in the university bar isn’t such good value after all – surely the family coffers would be a lot less used up, and life would be lot more comfortable for all.
